Ironman: Potts Really Cast

Like with most reasonably high profile graphic novel adaptations, speculation around the casting of the main characters for the upcoming IRON MAN movie has been running a little rampant. We’ve known for a while now that Robert Downey Jnr. will be donning the tin suit, but the role of “Pepper” Potts has been, up until now, there for the taking. Finally though, we’ve got a name to put to the character of Virginia Potts: Gwyneth Paltrow.

At first I was a little perplexed by her casting. Director, Jon Favreau indicated very early on in the development of the Iron Man movie that he was not looking to cast known actors in the main roles, but then it was announced that RDJ would be playing Tony Stark (Iron Man). While that announcement seemed to go against everything that Favreau intended it’s undeniable that Downey Jnr is perfect for the role… Paltrow on the other hand, what’s the deal with casting her as Stark’s personal assistant?

Well, it appears that Gwyneth Paltrow was the one to throw her hat into the ring! Marvel’s president of production, Kevin Feige, says that Paltrow’s ‘people’ let them know that the Academy Award winner was interested. After a few phone calls the deal was done.

While I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of Gwyneth, or that her involvement in Iron Man means much to me, I’m sure that having a star of her calibre onboard is making the bean counters at Marvel (and Merrill Lynch) very happy.

In additional Iron Man news, it’s been confirmed that Stan Winston Studio is going to be constructing the suits which will be worn in the film. Given Stan Winston’s previous work (The Thing, The Terminator, Predator, Jurassic Park, Constantine, Doom, War of the Worlds – to name just a few) you can bet that the costume (which is said to look very much like the suit in current Iron Man comics) is going to look awesome. I endorse Gwyn

  • hubba hubba.
but is she suited to the part, or just a big budget name to draw in the punters?…
Big names don’t save stinkers, they just get tarred with the same brush.

  • Fair question
I think that the fact that she sought out ‘a movie like this’ is probably an indication that she’s looking for a vehicle that will broaden her appeal – I mean, I don’t know about you, but I think about the kind of actress she is, I think of Great Expectations and Shakespeare in Love, mostly weighty gear that doesn’t reach as broad an audience.. Sure she’s done some lighter stuff, but nothing that has actually been successful enough to give her that broader appeal. Perhaps she thinks that something like this could do just that.

OR, it’s entirely possible that I’m talking out of my ass and she just happens to be a huge comic nut.

  • food for thought…
Or maybe (just to be totally sceptical) she has seen what getting on board a successful franchise has done for the earning power of lesser-known stars. Toby McGuire immediately comes to mind…
